I am a Hungarian-Born filmmaker in London, England. I was born under the name Roland Kolozs. I come with over 10 years of background in the media.
I’ve worked with Hungary’s biggest news websites and TV channels, including the formerly independent ORIGO, TV2 and RTL Klub. At age 20, I was one of the founders of IGN Hungary, the localised version of the entertainment news giant, and I later lead the site as Editor in Chief.
I relocated to London in 2019 and completed Kingston University’s Filmmaking MA Course with distinction. I have writer credits with Bridgehead media, and recently worked on Season 13 of the hit show Call the Midwife for Neal Street Productions.
My Dissertation Short Film, Night of The Living Pepperoni earned over 10 festival selections with multiple screenings around the world (including Las Vegas and London). The film was also selected for Publishing on Amazon Prime Video under the SWIFF festival’s official inclusion.
I come 10 years of background in writing, including journalism, reporting, copywriting, copyediting, as well as lead editorial roles. I have deep respect for all forms of media and entertainment, but I find moving images the most diverse, effective and extensive audiovisual canvases.
The advantage of film and video is to be able to tell a story that feels fresh and familiar at the same time: to bring the viewer to a place where they’ve been before and show them something new. To tell them something well known in a way never heard before.
My years of experience in the media made me sensitive both to social issues and online content consumption habits. I address various audiences with messages they resonate with, emotions they can relate to, asking questions we all want answered.
As a journalist I was a consumer first, but with access to various reader analytics both at entertainment and global news websites, giving me insight on the type of content that makes readers react to, and the kind of stories they are sensitive to.
Content and information only worth so much without context. My goal is always to form a strong statement that doesn’t chew answers into viewers mouths, rather provokes questions and embrace emotions that we can all relate to.
Working in the news departments taught me to look at both sides, while my time as a reporter taught me which questions to ask first. As a filmmaker, I use these skills to involve even the most sceptical and distant viewers, and lead their attention throughout.
A story without a strong ending fades easily, but it’s just as important to ground your story in a relevant and timely theme.
After all, that is what solidifies memories: the questions that arise in that moment of time, and our responses to those that make us who we are.
I want my audience to remember my films, and leave them with images and emotions worth experiencing over and over.
In my works I am revolving around subjects like anxiety depression, suicide, drug abuse, commercialism, emotional abuse and toxic masculinity.
Made from the micro-budget of just over £2500, Night of The Living Pepperoni is the horror-comedy of the everyday worker you didn’t know you needed.
Our protagonist, Tom is at the very end of his shift, just about to deliver a final pizza before he can call it a day.
Little does he know that the world is at the beginning of a deadly outbreak, making his last shift crazier and scarier than what he could prepare for.
This zero-budget student film was filmed during the third lockdown, when depressing Zoom-classes and fading memories of human interactions became our new reality.
Don’t Hang Up is the story of Paul, a music teacher who decides to hang himself after one of his classes.
As his suicide doesn’t go quite as he planned, he accidentally accepts a call from his favourite student, all while hanging to his life by the edge of his desk.
